Wisdom Capital: The Mentor Principle

(Our guest blogger, John Montgomery, is a Partner & Chairman at law firm Montgomery & Hansen, CA & helps start-ups in Silicon Valley to build world-class, value-driven companies.)
What is the single most effective move an entrepreneur can make to increase the probability of building a successful business that will change the world?

Engaging a mentor
Having a mentor is especially critical if an entrepreneur wants to build a “Conscious Company” as described in AuthorsGlobe’s Manifesto because Conscious Capitalism requires a new approach to business. Because there are still relatively few entrepreneurs who have built successful conscious businesses, the Conscious Capitalism MasterClass Series provides aspiring conscious entrepreneurs with access to model mentor archetypes like Chip Conley & Doug Rauch.

What are the qualities of a good mentor?
AuthorsGlobe’s triple mission of Educating, Empowering & Connecting reflects three of the most essential mentoring skills. Effective mentors educate by sharing their experience & knowledge, empower by encouraging mentees to make informed decisions, & connect them to trusted resources that accelerate their success.

To succeed, a mentor must offer a safe forum for the transmission of wisdom. Mentorship only works when the mentee feels safe enough to be vulnerable & admit that s/he doesn’t have all the answers.

The ideal mentor
The ideal mentor for an entrepreneur has built a successful business in the same or related industry.   S/He has achieved enough business & financial success to mentor from a secure & stable place that transcends the quotidian needs of survival.   The best mentors are not motivated by money but by the love of helping another succeed. The best mentorships run on a current of love & trust because human beings work best when we are loved & trusted.

Your Call To Action
I was thrilled when AuthorsGlobe invited me to participate in the Conscious Capitalism MasterClass Series because AuthorsGlobe embodies many of the qualities of an effective mentor in empowering its audience with knowledge.  As a corporate attorney representing startups in Silicon Valley, I’ve observed that the founders in almost all of my most successful companies had experienced mentors to guide them.  In my upcoming book, Wisdom Capital: Conscious Capitalism for Entrepreneurs, mentorship is one of the most critical developmental patterns for success.  It is so critical, in fact, that no entrepreneur should build a company without a mentor.   If you are building a business & don’t have a mentor, this column is your call to action to find one.

Share your successful mentorship stories
The next several columns will explore the role of the mentor in building successful, conscious companies.  In the meantime, I’d like to hear from you about successful mentorships you have experienced in business.  How did you find your mentor?  What were the qualities that made your mentor effective?  What was the rhythm of your working relationship?  How did your mentor educate, empower & connect you?  How did you establish a trust-based relationship?
